Meta’s AI Assistant Muse Expands to Mac as Amazon Blocks It From Shopping Platform

Meta’s AI assistant app, Muse, launched on Mac this week, allowing it to interact with files, messages, calendar, notes and mail directly within native applications, following its earlier debut on mobile and web, where it briefly topped US App Store charts. As on other platforms, users control Muse’s access on an opt-in basis, and the app requests approval before performing sensitive actions. Mark Zuckerberg noted the rapid pace of development when announcing the Mac release.

The expansion comes amid intensifying competition among consumer AI agents, which many in the industry view as central to computing’s future, disrupting traditional app ecosystems and software businesses. Rivals include Instinct, reportedly raising funds at a $10 billion valuation, and Poke, which was acquired by Cognition earlier this year. Muse and Instinct both introduced voice calling capabilities this week as companies race to capture consumer market share.

Separately, Amazon has blocked Muse from making purchases on its platform, displaying an error message stating that unauthorized AI agent access violates its customer terms of use. The move follows growing tension between tech companies over agentic commerce, with Amazon operating its own foundation models and inference infrastructure. Beyond competitive considerations, Amazon may have practical concerns, since AI models, including Muse despite comparatively low hallucination rates, remain prone to errors that could create complications for both customers and vendors if agents make mistaken purchases, potentially prompting Amazon to wait before opening its platform more broadly to AI-driven shopping.
