Jamie Dimon, JPMorgan CEO, Suggests AI Might Lead to a 3½-Day Workweek

Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) could pave the way for shorter workweeks, forecasts JPMorgan’s CEO Jamie Dimon, who took the helm at the bank in 2006 and became Chairman of the Board a year later.

The bank has long utilized AI and machine learning (ML) in areas such as fraud detection and offering data-driven value to its clientele. Observing these initial triumphs, along with the swift advancements in AI by major tech entities, the company chose to expedite its AI integration and establish a top-tier platform —named OmniAI — for efficient and expansive AI/ML application.

Centenarians

“Your children are going to live to 100 and not have cancer because of technology,” said Dimon last week in an interview with Bloomberg TV. “And literally they’ll probably be working 3½ days a week.”

Dimon’s remarks regarding a reduced workweek seem to focus on efficiency rather than adaptability. Historically, however, he has expressed skepticism about remote and hybrid work setups, although he acknowledged in the past that remote work may be suitable for certain positions such as coding, research and caregiving roles predominantly held by women, he believes it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution, particularly for leadership roles.

Dimon emphasizes the substantial value the bank’s AI investments are bringing, noting their application in areas such as research, trading and customer service. In response to queries about AI replacing certain banking positions, he acknowledged the inevitable shift, stating that technological advancements have always led to job transitions. However, he highlighted the bank’s recruitment of around 30,000 individuals annually and anticipates many affected employees will be reallocated to different roles and areas within the institution.

And the data doesn’t lie either:

A recent Goldman Sachs report suggests that AI could impact as many as 300 million jobs globally and predicts that AI technology has the potential to enhance labour productivity and could elevate global GDP by up to 7% in the long run.

Concurrently, the Pew Research Center indicates that approximately 1 in 5 American workers are in roles with “high exposure” to artificial intelligence, though it remains uncertain whether AI will augment or replace these positions.
