MIT LIDS Secures Appalachian Regional Commission Funding for Generative AI in Rural Smart Grid Innovation

MIT’s Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems (LIDS) has received a $1,365,000 grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission for the “Smart Grid Deployment Consortium (SGDC)” project, focusing on AI-driven smart grid modeling for rural areas. The initiative, part of a collaborative effort involving Tennessee Tech University and partners across several states, aims to develop generative AI models for grid management. These models will enhance grid planning by generating realistic data scenarios, aiding in the adoption of new energy technologies.

The project, led by Kalyan Veeramachaneni of LIDS, will leverage the HILLTOP+ platform for testing smart grid technologies, offering a virtual environment for rural utilities and startups to evaluate new solutions. Veeramachaneni highlighted the transformative potential of generative AI in the energy sector, emphasizing the integration of AI technologies with domain expertise. Satish Mahajan of Tennessee Tech and Michael Aikens, director of the Center for Rural Innovation, underscored the project’s collaborative nature and its significance for the Appalachian region’s sustainable future.
