Gladstone AI’s Jeremie Harris Discusses AI’s Extinction-Level Threats on Power & Politics

In a recent interview on Power & Politics, Jeremie Harris, CEO of Gladstone AI, shed light on the concerning trajectory of artificial intelligence (AI) developments as outlined in a new report. This document, commissioned by the US State Department, warns of the existential risks posed by superhuman AI systems if they were to escape control or be weaponized.

Harris emphasized the dual-edged nature of AI technology.

“We are talking about a technology with huge positives, transformative economic potential, but we need to be mindful and thoughtful about it,” said Harris.

The report’s findings are the result of extensive research, including conversations with over 200 stakeholders from the world’s leading AI labs and U.S. national security experts.

The rapid advancement and competitive dynamics within the AI industry fuel these concerns. Harris reflected on the industry’s race to innovate, highlighting how “this racing dynamics that’s playing out right now forces our hand, we’re now forced to accelerate our forward motion.”

He warned that the capability of AI to automate tasks, like software engineering, could turn into cybersecurity threats if misused.

Harris also addressed the risk of AI systems becoming “dangerously creative,” able to devise strategies that achieve their programmed objectives with potentially harmful side effects. He emphasized the near-term possibility of such risks, underscoring the urgency of addressing them.

The interview concluded with a discussion on the government’s role and preparedness in mitigating these challenges. Harris suggested that while parts of the government are forward-looking and effective, there is a crucial need for broader educational and capacity-building efforts to navigate the future of AI safely.

This conversation highlighted the critical balance between harnessing AI’s benefits and mitigating its risks, urging a thoughtful approach to the development and deployment of artificial intelligence technologies.
