Medal, a startup initially focused on video game clipping, has spun off its cross-platform AI assistant app, Highlight, into an independent company with $10 million in new funding. Led by General Catalyst, the round included participation from Valor, SV Angel, and Conviction Embed, while Medal also invested $3 million from its recent $13 million raise.

Highlight’s team now includes Medal’s co-founder Pim de Witte, along with former ClickUp VP of Design Haris Butt, Medal co-founder Josh Lipson, and Mark Bond, Medal’s original head of growth. De Witte shared that Highlight began as an internal project within Medal to bridge large language models (LLMs) with desktop content, but a separate structure was necessary to expand and attract new talent.

Highlight offers a desktop AI assistant that integrates screen content, voice notes, and documents to answer user questions and perform tasks like summarizing and highlighting content. With its latest version, Highlight enables custom prompt-based actions and opens the platform for developers to create automation features, such as summarizing specific meeting segments.

General Catalyst’s Niko Bonatsos remarked that Highlight’s design allows users to harness AI without complex commands, noting it’s a step beyond traditional chat interfaces. Highlight is currently free, with future pricing planned based on word count processed by the assistant.
