Meta Develops AI-Powered Search Engine to Reduce Dependence on Google and Bing, Report Says

Meta Platforms is developing an AI-based search engine to reduce its reliance on Google and Microsoft’s Bing, according to a report by The Information. The AI search engine will power Meta AI, a conversational chatbot available on WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook, providing users with real-time answers on current events. This move is part of Meta’s broader strategy to enter the AI search market, currently dominated by Google, OpenAI, and Microsoft.

Google, meanwhile, is integrating its advanced AI model, Gemini, into its search products to enhance conversational capabilities. OpenAI, backed by Microsoft, utilizes Bing for real-time web queries in its ChatGPT platform. The growing reliance on web data scraping for AI models, however, has raised questions around copyright and fair compensation for content creators.

In response to these concerns, Meta recently confirmed that its chatbot will use Reuters content to answer user questions on news and events in real time.
