Lila Sciences Receives $200M to Disrupt AI-Driven Autonomous Labs for Scientific Discovery

Lila Sciences, a Boston-based company pioneering AI-powered autonomous labs for life sciences, chemical research, and materials science, has raised $200 million in seed funding. The investment, led by Flagship Pioneering, includes participation from General Catalyst, March Capital, ARK Venture Fund, Altitude Life Science Ventures, Blue Horizon Advisors, the State of Michigan Retirement System, Modi Ventures, and a wholly owned subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA).

With this funding, Lila Sciences is accelerating the development of its AI-driven platform and autonomous laboratories, designed to transform scientific experimentation. The company’s system integrates generative AI with scalable autonomous science units, allowing researchers to optimize and scale experiments across diverse scientific domains. The platform is built to enhance discovery in human health and sustainability, providing industry partners with a new model for high-speed, high-precision scientific innovation.

CEO Geoffrey von Maltzahn described Lila’s approach as a paradigm shift in research, emphasizing that AI-powered experimentation will dramatically expand the pace of discovery. He stated that by combining artificial intelligence with autonomous laboratory infrastructure, Lila is unlocking new possibilities in materials science, chemistry, and biotechnology.

The leadership team includes George Church, Ph.D., serving as Chief Scientist Officer, Andrew Beam, Ph.D., as Chief Technology Officer, Kenneth Stanley, Ph.D., as Senior Vice President, Rafael Gómez-Bombarelli, Ph.D., as Chief Scientific Officer of Materials, and Christopher Fussell as President of Operations. Together, they are steering Lila Sciences toward a future where AI accelerates scientific breakthroughs beyond traditional constraints.
