Protein Industries Canada has announced a $15 million investment from the Government of Canada to accelerate the adoption of genomics and artificial intelligence across the country’s agrifood value chain. The funding aims to bolster plant breeding, on-farm productivity, and food manufacturing innovation, supporting the country’s $25 billion agrifood growth target.
Of the total, $7 million will be directed toward genomics for developing improved pulse and cereal crop varieties, while $8 million will support AI applications in seed development, supply chain optimization, and quality assurance.
Minister Mélanie Joly said the initiative reflects Canada’s commitment to building a more competitive and sustainable food system. Protein Industries Canada CEO Robert Hunter emphasized the potential to enhance crop resilience, productivity, and global competitiveness through these technologies.
