Microsoft has unveiled its first large-scale AI system, described by CEO Satya Nadella as the “first of many” Nvidia AI factories that will power OpenAI workloads and other advanced applications across its global Azure data centers. Each factory is built on more than 4,600 Nvidia GB300 rack computers equipped with the new Blackwell Ultra GPUs, connected via Nvidia InfiniBand high-speed networking technology.
The rollout signals Microsoft’s intent to rapidly expand its AI infrastructure, with plans to deploy hundreds of thousands of Blackwell Ultra GPUs worldwide. The announcement follows OpenAI’s recent $1 trillion data center partnerships with Nvidia and AMD, underscoring Microsoft’s position as a global leader in frontier AI infrastructure.
With over 300 data centers in 34 countries, Microsoft said Azure is uniquely equipped to handle the demands of next-generation models with hundreds of trillions of parameters. The company plans to share additional details on its AI infrastructure strategy later this month, when CTO Kevin Scott speaks at TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco.
