OpenAI Expands Hardware and Merchandise Push With ChatGPT-Branded Basketball and Apparel Line

OpenAI has broadened its foray into physical products this week, releasing a ChatGPT-branded basketball alongside its recently launched $230 Codex Micro keyboard. The $70 rubber basketball is tied to what the product listing describes as the “Pause. Play. Prompt.” campaign, which OpenAI frames as an effort to encourage people to step away from screens. Beyond the basketball listing, no additional public materials referencing the campaign were identified.

The basketball is part of a broader merchandise line OpenAI has introduced, which includes apparel featuring phrases such as “Good research takes time.” The lineup also includes a $175 quarter-zip garment described in its product listing as evoking the feel of academic life.

The releases follow OpenAI’s entry into hardware earlier this week with the Codex Micro, a keyboard designed to help users manage AI coding agents through its Codex platform. That launch came alongside separate reporting on a forthcoming OpenAI hardware device, described as a screenless smart speaker, which remains under development.

The expansion into consumer merchandise adds another dimension to OpenAI’s broader push beyond software, as the company continues building out its presence across both AI tools and physical products aimed at everyday users.
