Allen Control Systems annnounced the U.S. Marine Corps selected its Bullfrog autonomous weapon system for the service’s Ground Based Air Defense program. The GBAD program is designed to give Marines systems that can detect, track and defeat drones, missiles and aircraft.

According to the Austin, Texas-based defense technology company, Bullfrog will be integrated into the Light Marine Air Defense Integrated System, or L-MADIS, the Marine Corps’ expeditionary counter-drone platform. The work will proceed through a prototype Other Transaction Agreement.

What is Bullfrog?

Bullfrog uses AI, computer vision and precision robotics to help firearms track and engage incoming threats. ACS said the system can be used with legacy or modern firearms.

The company promotes Bullfrog as a lower-cost response to the spread of weaponized drones as shown in conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East where cheap drones have forced militaries to use much more expensive interceptors.

In June, Allen Control Systems announced $200 million in Series B funding led by Smash Capital, valuing the company at $2.2 billion. The company said the funding will support manufacturing, deployment of its Bullfrog counter-drone system and development of additional autonomous battlefield systems, with Bullfrog already deployed with the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy.
