Anthropic Updates Claude Voice Mode, Launches Opus 5 With Fewer Restrictions

Anthropic has announced that Claude’s voice mode now lets users choose between its Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku models, defaulting to the fastest version of whichever model was last used in text chat. The update aims to support longer, more complex conversations, including communication feedback and brainstorming, and allows voice mode to interact with apps like Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack, Canva, and Notion, a capability OpenAI’s voice mode currently lacks. The company also previously added beta multilingual support across ten languages. The updated voice mode is rolling out in beta to all users, though free-tier access remains limited to the Haiku model with one connected app.

In addition to this, Anthropic launched Opus 5, the newest version of its flagship model, following Opus 4.8’s release in May. The company said Opus 5 outperforms its larger Fable 5 model on several benchmarks while being cheaper and less restricted. Anthropic highlighted improvements in the model’s ability to verify and iteratively refine its own work. Opus 5 also carries fewer cybersecurity-related safeguards than Fable 5, with safety classifiers expected to engage 85% less often. Alongside the launch, Anthropic introduced a beta feature called Automatic Fallbacks, which reroutes flagged prompts to a less restricted model rather than returning an error.
