Foundational Industries has announced $25 million in seed funding to launch a network of U.S. factories designed around physical AI, starting with equipment for data centers.
BoxGroup and Zigg Capital led the round, with participation from Abstract, Adverb Ventures, Buckley Ventures, Oceans and Offline Ventures, according to Foundational Industries. The company said it plans to open its first facility by the end of 2026.
“The factory has to be designed for AI from the ground up,” founder and CEO Jonathan Winer wrote in a blog post announcing the launch. “Every process, every work cell, every material movement, every inspection step, every scheduling decision, every quality loop has to be built around a common intelligence layer. The goal is not a factory assisted by AI. The goal is an agentic factory orchestrated by AI.”
Reindustrialization As The New Arms Race
Winer said that the U.S. cannot match China by rebuilding the same labor-intensive manufacturing system. China has spent heavily on advanced production, installs more industrial robots than the rest of the world combined and now makes roughly one-third of global goods, according to the company’s announcement.
Instead, Foundational plans to compete by designing factories around AI, robotics and software from the outset. The company said autonomous production could allow the U.S. to turn its strength in AI models and computing into domestic manufacturing capacity for strategically important goods.
The manufacturing transition will not be won by retrofitting the old industrial base, Winer stressed.
“It will not come from adding a robot arm to a legacy line, a vision model to an inspection station, a humanoid to a warehouse aisle, or an AI scheduler on top of yesterday’s factory,” Winer said. “Those tools will improve productivity. They will not create autonomous production.”
Foundational’s Factories
Unlike companies that sell individual automation tools to existing manufacturers, Foundational plans to own and operate the factories. Its facilities will be built around a common AI system that connects product design, process planning, robotic work, inspections, scheduling, quality control and supply-chain operations.
Each factory is also expected to produce data that can improve later sites. Foundational said information from production, inspection and workflow decisions will be used to refine its software and shorten the time needed to deploy additional factories.
“This is how America leapfrogs,” Winer said. “Not by recreating the physical world China already dominates. Not by trying to win the last war on labor cost, scale, and legacy supply chains. But by reinventing the means of production itself, with AI at the center.”
The Foundational Team
Winer noted he has spent about 25 years developing technology-enabled infrastructure and deploying more than $3 billion in capital. His previous work included physical-infrastructure investments at Alphabet’s Sidewalk Infrastructure Partners, according to Foundational.
The company’s team brings experience in physical AI and large-scale manufacturing and it is that combination that Winer said is central to its strategy of linking software development with the practical demands of running factories.
“We are launching our first facility at the end of this year,” winer noted. “It will be the first node in a network of factories designed from the ground up to optimize AI. Our initial focus is manufacturing capacity for AI data-center equipment, where new silicon is driving new demand for power, cooling, interconnect, and physical infrastructure.”
Foundational did not disclose the factory’s location, expected size, customers or the specific products it will make.
