Celanese, Vigor Partner on Lightweight Plastic Joints for Humanoid Robots

Celanese and Vigor Precision have formed a strategic partnership to develop lightweight plastic joint components for humanoid robots, with the companies targeting a reduction in joint-module weight of more than 30% compared with traditional metal designs.

According to the companies, the Texas-based Celanese will supply high-performance engineering plastics and technical support, while the Hong Kong-based Vigor will contribute its experience in precision plastic gears and components. The companies signed the agreement Aug. 14 at Celanese’s Shanghai Commercial and Technology Center.

The work will focus on replacing some metal components inside robot joints with engineered plastics while maintaining the strength, precision and durability required for repeated motion and changing loads.

“Robotics is an increasingly important growth area for engineered materials, with customers seeking compact, durable, lightweight and low-noise solutions that can perform reliably in demanding applications,” Celanese senior VP Todd Elliott said in the announcement.

Vigor said the goal is to cut joint weight without sacrificing transmission accuracy or long-term reliability as lighter joints could reduce the mass robots must move and potentially improve energy use and response times.

“Today’s partnership marks a crucial step in infusing ‘material genetics’ into ‘precision manufacturing,’” noted Vigor CEO Hoi-sang Chan. “We look forward to working closely together to achieve the precise formulation of high-performance materials for robotic joints, thereby clearing the way for the large-scale deployment of humanoid robots.”

Robot Joint Components

Humanoid robot joints have to withstand repeated starts, stops and changes in direction while carrying varying loads, and that puts pressure on materials used in gears and other transmission components, the companies pointed out.

Celanese and Vigor said their development work will focus on several requirements:

  • High strength and rigidity
  • Heat resistance and thermal stability
  • Dimensional accuracy
  • Low-friction and self-lubricating properties
  • Precision transmission
  • Reduced component weight

Celanese said it will develop materials around Vigor’s technical requirements and support material selection, validation and preparation for higher-volume manufacturing.

“The agreement marks not only the establishment of a supplier-customer relationship but also represents deep technical integration across the entire industrial value chain,” the companies said in the announcement.

The Companies

Vigor has worked on precision plastic transmission systems for more than 40 years and manufactures plastic gears and other components. The Hong Kong-based company operates four manufacturing facilities in Dongguan, China.

Celanese supplies specialty materials across industries and generated $9.5 billion in net sales in 2025. The company reported it has been expanding its engineered-materials work into robotics as manufacturers look for lighter components that can handle demanding mechanical applications.

The companies said while the initial focus is on humanoid robot joints, with potential applications extending to industrial, commercial and service robots. The companies did not report production targets, customer names or a timetable for commercial availability of the new joint components.
