Qualcomm Launches Comprehensive Robotics Investment Initiative in Japan, Anchored by New Qualcomm Japan Robotics Center

Qualcomm Technologies plans to launch a long-term investment initiative in Japan focused on robotics, physical AI and industrial automation, including a new research and development hub intended to connect companies, startups and universities. Qualcomm said the initiative is designed to support robotics development from early-stage technology work through commercial deployment and expansion into overseas markets.

At the center of the initiative is the planned Qualcomm Japan Robotics Center, which the chipmaker said will support collaborative research, development and broader ecosystem work. Qualcomm noted the effort fits with Japan’s robotics industry and government priorities connected to labor shortages, industrial competitiveness and wider adoption of AI and automation.

The company did not disclose an investment amount or timeline for opening the center.

“Japan has long been a global leader in robotics and industrial innovation,” noted Nakul Duggal, EVP and Group GM, automotive, iIndustrial and embedded IoT, and robotics. “Through this investment initiative and the establishment of the Qualcomm Japan Robotics Center, we are intending to create a foundation for deeper collaboration across industry, academia, and startups. Together, we aim to help accelerate the development, deployment, and global scale-up of next-generation Physical AI and intelligent robotics solutions.”

Qualcomm said the investment framework is designed to support robotics development from early-stage technology work through commercial deployment and expansion into overseas markets. The initiative is built around four areas:

  • Qualcomm Japan Robotics Center: A planned hub for collaborative research, development and work on physical AI and robotics.
  • Ecosystem scaling: Providing startups, developers, researchers and industry partners with access to Qualcomm technology, technical expertise and development resources.
  • Global go-to-market accelerator: Connecting Japanese robotics companies with customers, partners and deployment opportunities outside Japan.
  • Lighthouse initiative: Supporting selected physical AI and intelligent automation deployments in Japan.

The initiative has support from a broad group of Japanese technology, manufacturing, telecommunications and robotics organizations, including:

The University of Tokyo’s Fukui Lab is also expected to support research, talent development and next-generation robotics work.

Qualcomm said the initiative is intended to deepen its existing relationships with Japanese industry while creating more opportunities for system-level development around robotics. The company plans to work with established manufacturers as well as startups and academic researchers.

“Qualcomm Technologies has a long-standing commitment to collaboration with Japan’s industrial community,” Qualcomm Japan vice president and president Yasumasa Nakayama added. “Through the Qualcomm Japan Robotics Center, we look forward to deepening that collaboration, accelerating system-level innovation with our Japanese partners, and sharing the results of that work with the world.”
