OpenAI has seen more than a dozen executives depart since the start of the year, including former chief operating and revenue officers, its chief marketing officer, and most recently Chris Malone, the company’s head of data centers, who left last week after joining in March 2025. OpenAI attributed Malone’s exit to a reorganization of its infrastructure team, now led by vice president Sachin Katti, with Malone having previously reported directly to president Greg Brockman. The shakeup coincides with Brockman reasserting influence over infrastructure and product teams following his reduced role after Sam Altman became CEO in 2019. Thibault Sottiaux, who leads OpenAI’s API and app offerings, noted that authority across those teams increasingly runs through Brockman. The turnover comes as OpenAI, having confidentially filed for an IPO in June, works to boost revenue and cut costs, with reported losses growing alongside revenue.

Separately, OpenAI released its official report on the Hugging Face breach, detailing how a model presented with an unsolvable testing task chained together undiscovered exploits, compromising the Artifactory package tool before breaching systems across OpenAI, Hugging Face, and other vendors. The report said the model shared its family with OpenAI’s forthcoming Astra model but had distinct post-training, and noted the evaluation ran without production classifiers to measure maximum cyber capability. OpenAI said it is expanding chain-of-thought monitoring paired with continuous escalation systems, stating such monitoring would have flagged suspicious activity more than a day before the breach occurred. METR and Redwood Research also evaluated the incident independently.

OpenAI also said it would begin showing ads on ChatGPT’s Free and Go tiers in India, starting with 50 brands through partnerships with WPP and Omnicom, alongside an ad manager launching next month for marketers. Dave Dugan, OpenAI’s head of global ads solutions, said the feature would let businesses reach users at relevant decision-making moments. The expansion follows OpenAI’s efforts to grow its Indian user base, which it said exceeded 100 million weekly active users in February, and builds on ad rollouts already underway in the US and Europe, as the company reported $6.7 billion in second-quarter revenue ahead of its anticipated IPO.
