Google announced new app quality requirements for Android developers this week, addressing industrywide memory chip shortages tied to the AI data center boom by introducing performance thresholds around dynamic memory and bitmap usage, along with code optimization standards to reduce slowdowns and crashes. The company will provide developer tools flagging apps that exceed these thresholds, alongside a forthcoming Memory Limiter feature offering deeper diagnostics later this year, with developers given until February 2027 to comply. Google also announced that Play Store apps must meet a Zero Tap Sign-In requirement during device migrations by April 2027, ensuring automatic restoration of sign-in status across devices.
Along with this, Google expanded its AI Mode search experience to function more like a travel agent, allowing users to track flight prices, book hotels, and view costs in points or miles through conversational requests. The tool now compares pricing across more than 300 airlines and travel sites, with flight tracking available in over 180 countries, while hotel booking has begun rolling out in the US in partnership with providers including Marriott, Hilton, and Expedia, with bookings completed through Google Pay while the hotel or platform handles service and cancellation policies.
In personnel news, Barret Zoph, co-founder of Thinking Machines Lab, has joined Google as vice president of research after a turbulent year that included his dramatic departure from Thinking Machines, a brief five-month return to OpenAI leading enterprise sales, and now a return to Google, where he previously worked.
