Kodiak AI Names Dallas–Houston Corridor As First Long-Haul Driverless Launch Lane

Vredit: Kodiak

Insider Brief:

  • Kodiak AI plans unsupervised long-haul driverless freight service on the Dallas–Houston Interstate 45 corridor by the end of 2026.
  • Since starting its driverless launch program in August, the company says it has consistently completed Lancaster, Texas–Houston deliveries with zero wheel interventions, including on surface streets.
  • The move builds on more than 3.5 million autonomous miles on that freight lane since 2019 and nearly two years of cab-empty commercial operations with Atlas Energy Solutions in the Permian Basin.

Kodiak AI announced it will open its first unsupervised commercial long-haul autonomous trucking route on the Dallas–Houston freight corridor by the end of 2026.

According to the Mountain View, Calif.–based company, Kodiak said it began a dedicated driverless long-haul launch program in August on its driverless-ready software and hardware stack. The company now says it consistently completes end-to-end deliveries between its Lancaster, Texas, hub and Houston without human intervention. During those runs, Kodiak said, a safety observer never touched the wheel, including on surface streets.

The program is meant to finish the final testing and validation for Kodiak’s initial long-haul safety case. Alongside daily preparation runs on I-45, the company is running driverless tests at closed-course tracks to stress conditions that are rare or too risky to introduce on public highways.

As of the end of August, Kodiak’s Autonomy Readiness Measure for the long-haul domain stood at 93%. The metric tracks how much of the company’s structured safety-case evidence for driverless operations is materially complete. The company said it expects to reach 100% and launch by year-end.

In December 2024, Kodiak said it became the first company to put driverless technology into customer-owned-and-operated trucks with Atlas Energy Solutions. As of June 30, 2026, the Kodiak Driver was integrated into 35 Atlas trucks and had logged more than 40,000 cumulative hours of paid driverless operations.

“We have almost two years experience in driverless operations – no human in the cab – for a paying customer in the Permian Basin,” founder and CEO Don Burnette noted in the announcement. “Our final driverless launch initiative has readied the same Kodiak Driver for highways, and the results are exactly what we anticipated. We are on track to complete our preparations and launch driverless highway service by the end of this year.”
