Google Expands AI Push With Public SynthID Checker, Playground Game Builder and Offline Note-Taker Foresight

Google has rolled out three new AI products in quick succession, opening its SynthID verification tool to the public, introducing an AI game-creation platform called Playground, and releasing an offline meeting note-taker for Mac named Google AI Edge Foresight.

This week, the company made its SynthID website available to everyone, allowing anyone to check whether an image, video or audio clip was generated by AI. The tool was first offered to select journalists, media professionals and researchers for testing at Google I/O last year. The site supports a wide range of common image, video and audio formats, including JPG, PNG, MP4, MOV, WAV and MP3.

SynthID, which Google introduced in 2023, watermarks media produced by the company’s Nano Banana, Veo and Lyriamodels, as well as generation tools such as Gemini, Flow, ProducerAI and Vids. OpenAI, Nvidia and Kakao also support the technology, while Apple is reportedly set to add support soon. Google has built SynthID verification into the Gemini app and Chrome, and said users currently submit 1 million verification requests each day. Microsoft and Meta maintain their own watermarking standards, though such tools have often failed to identify content created by their makers’ own models.

On Wednesday, Google Labs, the company’s public incubator, introduced Playground, which lets users build browser-based games from simple text prompts without coding expertise. Creators can pick a genre such as trivia or racing or start from scratch, choose between 2D and 3D and single-player or multiplayer formats, and then describe mechanics, gameplay and visual style. Users can also upload visuals that the AI converts into game assets matching the game’s art style.

Games can be played on mobile devices and computers, kept private, shared by link or published to Playground’s Explore gallery, where they can support features such as leaderboards. Google said it plans to add Unity Spark integration in a future update, potentially giving users additional 3D capabilities and professional-level mechanics. Playground is initially available to users aged 18 and older in the U.S., with wider rollout planned. Playing games is free, while creation runs on a weekly token system, with higher limits for Google One AI subscribers. The tool enters a growing field that includes Roblox, which introduced its own prompt-based Build feature in July.

In other Google news, the team behind an offline AI dictation tool the company released in April has introduced Google AI Edge Foresight, a Mac app positioned as a competitor to AI note-taker Granola. The app runs entirely offline using the on-device EmbeddingGemma 2 model, with 740 million parameters, to capture notes across apps and in-person meetings. Like Granola, it offers a split-screen view pairing shorthand manual notes with AI-generated ones, while also providing meeting transcripts and a Gemma 4-powered assistant users can chat with for answers.

Users can upload PDFs, Google Docs, Microsoft Office files, plain text, Markdown and web bookmarks to build a knowledge base, which the app draws on to answer questions in real time during meetings. Google said the app is optimized for Apple Silicon. Foresight joins a crowded market where Wispr and Calendly have recently released note-takers, and Superhuman, formerly Grammarly, acquired YC-backed Fathom last month.
