Montreal-based Startup Harnessing AI to Decarbonize Buildings & Combat Climate Change

Sam Ramadori, CEO of BrainBox AI, is not your typical tech executive. Instead of focusing solely on the next big thing in software or consumer tech, he’s tackling one of the most pressing issues of our time: climate change. And he’s doing it through an angle many might overlook — the inefficiencies of industrial HVAC systems.

“Buildings are a huge emitter of greenhouse gases; it’s one of the biggest climate problems on our planet,” Ramadori pointed out, highlighting the unexpected yet critical front line in the fight against global warming.

BrainBox AI, based in Montreal, Canada, is at the forefront of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) with building management to significantly cut energy consumption and emissions. The company’s advanced AI reduces buildings’ energy use by up to 25% and emissions by up to 40%. This substantial impact is achieved by autonomously optimizing HVAC systems via cloud technology.

“We’ve over the years developed this platform with all the data infrastructure necessary to do autonomous optimization and now we’re layering on top this generative AI virtual assistant,” said Ramadori.

This new generative AI-powered virtual building assistant, built on Amazon Bedrock, represents a leap forward. It supports facility managers with real-time, data-rich advice, moving beyond mere business intelligence to proactive problem-solving.

“It’s not just giving you a chart; it’s giving you potential answers on what the problem is and where you should likely go look and try to solve it,” said Ramadori.

The mission driving BrainBox AI and its employees is clear and potent: “Decarbonizing the built environment to save the planet with AI.” This vision reflects a broader ambition not just to innovate in technology, but to use that technology as a beacon for environmental stewardship.
