OpenAI’s Liam Fedus Launches AI-Powered Materials Science Startup with OpenAI Support

Liam Fedus, former VP of Research for Post-Training at OpenAI, has announced his departure to launch a materials science AI startup. OpenAI plans to invest in and partner with the new venture, reinforcing its focus on AI for scientific discovery.

Fedus, who holds a background in physics, stated that he is eager to apply AI technology to the field, calling AI-driven scientific advancements a key strategic area for OpenAI and the pursuit of artificial superintelligence.

The startup will enter a competitive space alongside Google DeepMind, Microsoft, and others, as AI increasingly plays a role in material discovery and scientific research. OpenAI’s backing signals confidence in the startup’s potential to drive breakthroughs in materials science.
