Common Sense Media has issued a critical risk assessment of Google’s Gemini AI, rating its “Under 13” and “Teen Experience” products as High Risk. The nonprofit, led by Robbie Torney, found that Gemini often mirrors adult versions with minimal safeguards, exposing minors to potentially unsafe material on sex, drugs, alcohol, and mental health advice.
The analysis noted Gemini identifies itself as a computer, but warned its one-size-fits-all approach overlooks the developmental needs of younger users. Google responded by defending its safeguards and red-teaming efforts, while acknowledging gaps in performance. The findings arrive as reports suggest Apple may integrate Gemini into Siri, raising further concerns about children’s safety in the expanding AI ecosystem.
