Anthropic Endorses California’s SB 53, Backing State-Level AI Transparency Rules

Anthropic has formally endorsed SB 53, a bill authored by California Senator Scott Wiener that would require the world’s largest AI developers to adopt transparency and safety frameworks before releasing advanced models. The move marks a rare win for the legislation, which faces strong opposition from industry groups such as the Consumer Technology Association and Chamber for Progress.

If passed, SB 53 would mandate safety reports, risk frameworks, and whistleblower protections to address catastrophic misuse scenarios, including bioweapons and large-scale cyberattacks. The endorsement signals Anthropic’s willingness to support state-level oversight despite its stated preference for federal regulation. With backing from one of the sector’s leading labs, SB 53 gains momentum as it approaches a final Senate vote.
