Warner Music Acquires AI Attribution Startup Sureel to Protect Artist Rights in the Age of Generative AI

Warner Music Group has acquired Sureel AI, a startup whose patented technology fingerprints songs and traces how AI models use their component elements. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The deal gives WMG enhanced tools to monitor when artists’ and songwriters’ work is used in AI-generated content or for model training. Sureel also offers name, image, and likeness attribution, tracking voice clones, AI-generated avatars, and style replication. CEO Robert Kyncl said the acquisition strengthens the company’s ability to protect and monetise its creative catalogue. Sureel founder and CEO Tamay Aykut said the partnership would allow the platform to scale its transparency mission across the broader music ecosystem.

Sureel will continue operating as a standalone platform. The acquisition marks a further evolution in WMG’s AI strategy, having previously sued and later licensed with AI music startups Suno and Udio.
