Anthropic will begin watermarking text generated by its AI models, including Claude, in order to comply with new European Union regulations, according to an updated company support page. The move follows the EU AI Act’s Transparency Code, which took effect August 2 and requires AI companies to mark AI-generated or edited content in ways detectable by other systems.
Anthropic said all models released after August 2 will automatically include watermarking technology for both generated text and files, using the C2PA open standard for file-based content. The company said support will be extended to older models as well, and that watermarks embedded in text will persist when copied and pasted elsewhere, potentially surviving some editing. Anthropic said watermarking is applied at the model level, meaning it will appear consistently across products including the Claude platform API, Claude, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, and Claude Tag.
The announcement comes in the face of a broader industry push toward watermarking AI content, following similar moves from AI music platform Suno and newsletter service Substack, which recently partnered with detection company Pangram to flag AI-generated writing. Beyond Anthropic, companies including Black Forest Labs, Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Synthesia have also committed to complying with the EU’s transparency code.
