Meta Reportedly Developing Camera-Free Smart Glasses Following Privacy Backlash

Meta is reportedly developing a new smart glasses model called Luna that omits built-in cameras, according to The Information, following backlash and accusations that its existing camera-equipped glasses function as invasive surveillance devices. The camera-free version would instead focus on AI interaction, featuring six built-in microphones and a side button that activates Meta’s AI chatbot and its Muse AI consumer agent, allowing users to communicate hands-free without recording capability.

The device may debut as soon as next week at Meta Connect, the company’s annual hardware and developer conference in Menlo Park, though Meta has not confirmed details publicly.

The move comes as Meta’s camera-equipped smart glasses have outperformed competitors in the broader wearables market, even as they draw criticism from privacy advocates who argue the devices normalize covert recording in public spaces. The smart glasses category has expanded significantly in recent years, with Meta positioned among its leading providers, though the industry continues to face skepticism over cost, usability and privacy concerns. Meta’s Reality Labs division, responsible for the company’s AR and smart glasses development, reported substantial ongoing financial losses in its most recent earnings disclosure, underscoring the high stakes of the hardware push as Meta works to broaden the appeal of its AI-integrated wearables beyond privacy-conscious skeptics.
