Bank of America Warns Customers Against Sharing Banking Credentials With AI Agents

Bank of America has urged customers not to share their banking usernames and passwords with AI agents, as personal AI assistants grow in popularity. In an email titled “Protecting your finances in the AI World,” the bank advised customers never to give their login details to another person or outside service, including AI-enabled tools or agents offering to act on their behalf.

Handing credentials to an AI assistant carries several risks. The agent could make financial moves without the customer’s knowledge, the bank might mistake its activity for fraud and lock the account, or a security flaw could leak credentials to hackers.

The warning comes as banks reportedly struggle with unauthorized AI agents accessing customer accounts. Banks, payment providers and processors are still working out how to safely allow customers to connect AI tools to their accounts, including for agentic payments that let agents autonomously buy items at the best price or time.

A Bank of America spokesperson confirmed the email, which was shared on social media, was authentic. The bank also reminded customers that if they share their credentials, they are responsible for any resulting activity, in line with account agreements at most banks that hold customers liable for anyone they give their login to.
