Elon Musk Tightens Grok Bot Usage Limits, Citing Unsustainable Costs

Some Grok Bot users found their weekly usage limits unexpectedly maxed out over Halloween weekend, even without using SpaceX’s agentic AI overnight. Users reported on X that their usage jumped from as little as 50% to 100%.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk confirmed on X that the change was deliberate rather than a glitch. Replying to a user’s question, he said the cost of running Grok Bot had become unsustainably high relative to the revenue it generates. Musk has not addressed the issue on his main feed and has continued promoting the agent’s ability to help users buy gifts for their families.

Grok Bot has been presented as a success story for the newly public SpaceX, which reported last month that AI now accounts for 52% of company income. Its renamed Super Intelligence division posted a $431 million profit, unusual in the AI industry, a figure that would have been higher without $1.2 billion in one-time costs tied to the Cursor acquisition. Musk recently described Grok Bot as the fastest-growing product he has ever seen.

Musk has not yet explained how subscribers’ usage limits will be affected going forward.
