Anthropic Warns in IPO Filing It May Soon Reach Recursive Self-Improvement Threshold

Anthropic’s revised S-1 filing, released Monday, contains a notable warning beyond its financials: the AI lab suggests it may be close to developing a model capable of recursive self-improvement, the point at which AI becomes so effective at training itself that capabilities accelerate dramatically.

Critics see such a milestone as a potential loss of human control, while enthusiasts view it as AI’s greatest promise for productivity and scientific discovery. Anthropic described it as both. The company said it uses AI in its own research but cautioned that using AI to build more capable AI could create considerable safety risks, an area covered by its Responsible Scaling Policy.

New risk disclosures state that Anthropic’s growing use of AI in R&D could cause model capabilities to outpace its safety, alignment and security work, and that it has previously failed to recognize capability leaps until after they occurred. Based on internal estimates for future models, it said it may imminently meet its policy’s definition of dramatically accelerated progress attributable to AI.

Anthropic stressed that no current model has crossed that threshold and said it does not expect to safely let Claude autonomously build future frontier models without meaningful human oversight. It is considering policy updates to keep humans in control. Skeptics note an S-1 serves as marketing as well as disclosure.
