Embracing AI for Future Leadership: Paul Hudson’s Talk with Lindsay Levin at TED

In a thought-provoking conversation with TED’s Lindsay Levin recently, pharmaceutical CEO Paul Hudson shared his vision for embracing AI within the pharmaceutical industry, focusing attention on its transformative potential.

Hudson, at the helm of Sanofi, expressed an ambitious goal: “We aim to be the world’s leading pharmaceutical company using AI at scale,” he said. This vision is not just aspirational but actively pursued, with Hudson revealing: “We have 23,000 people using AI as often as every month, 9,000 people in the company using AI as often as every day.”

Hudson’s insights into AI’s role in pharmaceuticals were not just about adopting new technologies but also about the cultural shifts necessary to innovate effectively.

He addressed the common apprehensions surrounding AI.

“For some people it’s Skynet and Terminator,” he said. “For some people, they confuse AI with cyber.” Yet, he stands firm on the potential of AI. “If it is the fourth industrial revolution, which we believe it is,” continued Hudson, “then hesitating, this fear that can take over, can deprive you of so much opportunity.”

The conversation also touched on the broader implications of AI beyond just technological advancements. Hudson pointed out the shift towards more meaningful work that AI could facilitate.

“The adoption of AI in particular is not about jobs,” he said. “More meaningful work is created.”

He highlighted the direct impact of AI on enhancing decision-making processes and operational efficiencies, ultimately leading to a competitive advantage.

Hudson also provided a candid look into the challenges of leading a major pharmaceutical company through such transformative times. He shared his experience with radical data transparency brought about by AI, where “You can see their data real-time.”

This level of openness has been both a challenge and an opportunity, pushing the organization towards greater accuracy and accountability.

Hudson’s conversation with Levin at TED not only shed light on the strategic incorporation of AI in Sanofi’s operations but also offered a glimpse into the future of leadership in the face of disruptive technologies. His call for leaders to embrace AI, to disrupt the status quo, and to foster a culture of innovation and agility resonates across industries, marking a pivotal moment in the journey towards the next industrial revolution.
