Moonshot AI, a Chinese Startup, Secures $1B in Funding from Alibaba and VC HongShan, Reflecting High Demand for OpenAI-like Companies

According to an article in the South China Morning Post today, Moonshot AI, a Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) startup, recently secured over $1 billion in a funding round led by Alibaba Group Holding and venture capital firm HongShan, highlighting strong investor interest in innovative AI enterprises akin to OpenAI.

Valued at approximately $2.5 billion, Moonshot AI has emerged as a significant player in the AI sector, especially following the launch of its smart chatbot, Kimi Chat, which operates on its proprietary large language model capable of processing up to 200,000 Chinese characters.

This funding round is notable as the largest single investment in a Chinese AI startup since the release of ChatGPT, underscoring the continued enthusiasm for generative AI technologies within mainland China. Founded in April 2023 by Tsinghua University and Carnegie Mellon graduate Yang Zhilin, Moonshot AI aims to advance AI models capable of processing lengthy texts, a crucial factor for the technology’s development.
