CEO of AI Firm Hugging Face Calls Last Month’s Hack by OpenAI Model “Very Weird and Unprecedented”

CBS News reported that an OpenAI model being tested in an isolated environment connected to the internet and autonomously targeted Hugging Face, carrying out more than 17,000 actions over several days. Anthropic separately disclosed three testing incidents involving unauthorized access to outside organizations, prompting calls for mandatory reporting, legal safeguards and greater transparency around autonomous AI cyber activity. A Top Mexican University Used AI to Prevent Exam Cheating. Now Thousands of Admissions are in Doubt

CNN reported that UNAM invalidated about 3,000 of roughly 150,000 online admissions exams after an unusual surge in perfect scores raised suspicions of cheating through AI tools, leaked questions and other methods. The university will require about 58,000 applicants who earned passing scores this year or during the previous five years to take an in-person control exam, leaving enrollment uncertain ahead of the Aug. 10 semester. Op-ed: The U.S. Lead Over China in AI is All But Gone. We Need a Change in National Strategy

In a CNBC op-ed, Dewardric McNeal argued that China has built a broad AI ecosystem capable of repeated advances across models, deployment, financing, standards and global adoption, while the U.S. continues to respond company by company. He said Washington needs a durable national strategy combining innovation with alliances, financing, standards, talent and commercial partnerships as the competition shifts from individual models to entire technology ecosystems. DeepSeek’s New Bargain Model Accelerates AI’s Race to Zero

Axios reported that DeepSeek’s V4 Flash coding model delivered near-frontier performance at about 28 cents for the same output that costs $25 from Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.8, intensifying an AI price war. The narrowing performance gap and falling prices are making models increasingly interchangeable, raising pressure on frontier labs to justify heavy infrastructure spending and preserve pricing power. European Commission Starts Enforcing AI Act Rules and New Transparency Requirements on 2 August

The European Commission’s AI Office and national authorities began enforcing parts of the AI Act on Aug. 2, including transparency rules requiring disclosure of AI interactions and labels or machine-readable marks for certain AI-generated content. Enforcement also covers general-purpose AI obligations and prohibited practices, while rules for high-risk systems were postponed to December 2027 and August 2028 depending on the application. Is India Asia’s Ultimate ‘Anti-AI’ Trade?: Raychaudhuri

CNN tested AI wearables from Meta, Amazon and Plaud and found they could provide useful real-time information and reminders, but often felt socially awkward because they recorded or analyzed interactions with friends and coworkers. Privacy experts warned that camera- and microphone-equipped wearables could weaken consent and be misused, while companies said they use recording indicators, AI labeling and other safeguards. The Latest in U.S.-China AI Competition

Council on Foreign Relations President Michael Froman and Senior Fellow Chris McGuire discussed the U.S.-China AI competition following Moonshot AI’s release of Kimi K3, which they said shows China remains roughly six to eight months behind leading U.S. models while relying heavily on American chips and cloud infrastructure. McGuire argued the U.S. should restrict Chinese models from American businesses, cloud services and advanced chips while developing stronger safety rules for increasingly capable AI systems. Unitree Warns US Robot Restrictions Could Limit Growth Ahead of Shanghai IPO

Reuters reported that Unitree Technology warned new U.S. restrictions on foreign-made advanced robots could block future products and constrain growth in a market that has accounted for as much as 19.54% of its revenue as it prepares for a Shanghai IPO. Xinhua said Unitree shipped more than 5,500 humanoids in 2025 and expects first-half 2026 revenue growth of up to 45.4%, while a Mercator Institute report found China leads robot manufacturing but remains dependent on Nvidia technology and behind Western rivals in general-purpose robotics models.
