Microsoft Expands AI Partnerships with Anthropic to Power Office 365 Applications

Microsoft is set to integrate Anthropic’s Claude models, including Claude Sonnet 4, into Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint, according to reporting from The Information. The agreement reduces Microsoft’s exclusive reliance on OpenAI, whose models currently drive much of the company’s productivity suite.

The move underscores Microsoft’s strategy to diversify its AI partnerships amid growing tensions with OpenAI, which is pursuing its own infrastructure and exploring ventures such as a LinkedIn competitor. While Microsoft continues to negotiate new terms with OpenAI, company leaders believe Anthropic’s technology delivers superior performance in specific areas, such as presentation design. The expansion builds on Microsoft’s existing multi-model approach, which already includes xAI’s Grok and its own in-house models.
