Handshake has acquired Cleanlab, expanding its AI data-labeling capabilities through a talent-focused acquisition, the companies confirmed. The deal brings nine Cleanlab researchers into Handshake’s organization, including co-founders Curtis Northcutt, Jonas Mueller, and Anish Athalye, all MIT PhDs known for their work on automated data auditing.
Founded in 2021, Cleanlab developed algorithms that identify labeling errors without requiring secondary human review, technology that will now be integrated into Handshake’s human-in-the-loop data services for leading AI labs. Handshake, originally launched in 2013, now provides labeled data to major model developers including OpenAI, and says the acquisition deepens its focus on delivering high-quality training data at scale.
