Anthropic has signed a deal to rent approximately $45 billion in AI compute from Nscale, a British AI infrastructure company, according to a source familiar with the matter. Nscale, founded in 2024 and already partnered with Microsoft, will supply Anthropic with computing power built on Nvidia’s new Vera Rubin chip system, a six-chip architecture representing the current state of the art. The six-year deal, first reported by Bloomberg, draws capacity from Nscale’s flagship West Virginia data center and is expected to begin powering Anthropic’s services in late 2027.
The agreement extends an aggressive compute expansion Anthropic has pursued over the past eight months as it works to compete with rivals including OpenAI. Earlier this month, the company signed a $10 billion deal with cloud startup Volta for six years of capacity from a Norwegian data center, following a $5 billion compute agreement with AMD in July. In May, Anthropic entered a large computing arrangement with SpaceX, reportedly providing roughly $1.25 billion in monthly capacity from two SpaceX data centers. Earlier deals in April expanded Anthropic’s existing partnerships with Amazon, adding five additional gigawatts of compute, and with Google and Broadcom. The broader industry, including Meta, continues pursuing similar large-scale compute acquisitions.
