Amazon announced plans to invest more than $100 million in a new advanced manufacturing facility in Indiana to make equipment for its fulfillment and robotics network.
The 585,000-square-foot Greenwood facility is expected to open by 2028 and create 300 manufacturing and engineering jobs with average annual pay of nearly $100,000, according to Amazon. The site is expected to bring fabrication, robotic welding, automated powder coating and assembly operations under one roof.
Amazon said the facility will also use AWS services, AI-powered manufacturing systems and robotics in its own production processes. Products made at the site will be distributed to Amazon fulfillment centers across North America.
The investment expands Amazon’s domestic robotics manufacturing operations. The company said it has manufactured more than 1 million robots in the U.S., primarily through facilities in Massachusetts, and deployed them across more than 300 sites globally. Those systems now assist employees with 75% of customer orders delivered worldwide, according to Amazon.
Amazon noted it has increasingly used robots throughout its fulfillment network while adding jobs for technicians, engineers and other workers who maintain and operate the systems. Positions planned for the Indiana facility include CNC operators, welders, powder-coating technicians, assemblers, manufacturing engineers, quality-assurance specialists, controls engineers and program managers.
The company selected Greenwood in part for its manufacturing workforce and access to logistics infrastructure. Amazon has operated in Indiana since 2008 and said it has invested more than $40 billion in the state and employs more than 27,000 people there. The Greenwood project follows an August announcement of a separate robotics manufacturing investment in Texas.
The new plant adds manufacturing capacity to a broader Indiana network that includes fulfillment and sortation centers, delivery stations, robotic facilities, data centers and energy projects.
