Feather Raises $7.6M in Pre-Seed Funding to Build Humanoid Platform for Third-Party Developers

Insider Brief

  • Feather Robotics raised $7.6 million in pre-seed funding to expand its modular humanoid platform for developers building physical AI applications, with Gradient leading the round.
  • The company said its wheeled bimanual robot is priced at $29,990, offers up to 10 hours of battery life, about 1 meter of reach and a software development kit for third-party applications.
  • Feather said it built its first prototype in two months, fulfilled its first customer order within nine months and has generated more than $1 million in revenue from customers in manufacturing, food service and other sectors.

Feather Robotics has raised $7.6 million in pre-seed funding to expand a modular humanoid robot platform for developers building physical AI applications.

Gradient led the round, with participation from Builder Capital, Geometry, Seed Innovations and Virgo VC, according to Seed Innovations. Feather frames its hardware as an alternative to vertically integrated humanoid systems that are difficult for outside developers to modify and lower-cost research platforms that may not be designed for commercial deployment.

Founded by former Google and Tesla employees Hoa Mai and Parsa Bakhtiari, Feather built its first prototype in two months, fulfilled its first customer order within nine months and has generated more than $1 million in revenue, according to the California-based company. Customers include companies in manufacturing and food service, including a manufacturer with $4 billion in annual revenue, according to the company.

The Specs

Feather’s robot is priced at $29,990 and can be ordered online. The company compared that with listed prices of about $68,000 for Unitree’s H2 Edu, $135,000 for Agibot’s G2 and $83,000 for Dexmate’s Vega.

Rather than using legs, Feather’s bimanual robot rides on a wheeled base designed to move in multiple directions. The company said that configuration improves stability and energy efficiency while reducing mechanical complexity.

Key specifications include:

  • Battery life: Up to 10 hours.
  • Reach: About 1 meter.
  • Payload: Designed to carry loads comparable to an adult human.
  • Modular hardware: Components are designed to be replaced or changed as needed.
  • Developer access: Each system includes a software development kit so third parties can build applications on the platform.

Feather indicated that simplifying the hardware is central to its approach, with fewer components intended to reduce failure points and make the robots easier to maintain. The company pointed out that as AI models for robotics become more widely available, developers will need hardware platforms that can run those models without building robots themselves. Feather said its systems are designed to support third-party software rather than tie customers to a closed technology stack.

“My background is in building embodied AI systems, and I’m on a mission to solve physical AI,” noted Mai, who serves as CEO. “But when I looked for a hardware platform to build on top of, I realized that none of them had the unit economics, reliability, and support logistics that I needed to succeed as an independent developer. That’s why we built Feather — to give every team, no matter their size, the infrastructure to scale physical AI.”
