OpenAI to Merge ChatGPT’s Chat and Work Tabs Into a Single Experience
OpenAI is preparing to combine the Chat and Work tabs in its ChatGPT desktop app, a move aimed at simplifying software that many users find confusing. The app currently separates ChatGPT and Codex, with ChatGPT further split into Chat and Work tabs, making it easy to lose track of where a project is located.
In an email to users, OpenAI said the merged experience will first be offered to select users for feedback before a wider rollout. The company said the change will allow users to move from exploring an idea to having ChatGPT carry it through in one place. Users will be able to bring in files and plugins and ask ChatGPT to build websites, create presentations or complete tasks on the web, while reviewing and guiding its work. Codex will remain a separate experience within the desktop app.
OpenAI also said that ChatGPT and Codex will now draw tokens from a shared allowance pool. The company said most users will not be affected, but depending on usage and model choice, some may need to wait for resets more often.
The move mirrors a similar step by rival Anthropic, which combined Claude’s chat and Cowork functions into a single interface in September.
