OpenAI Secures $11B at $1.25T Valuation as Funding Round Falls Short of Earlier Target

OpenAI has reportedly secured $11 billion in a new funding round that values the AI lab at $1.25 trillion, according to Bloomberg, which cited people familiar with the matter on Friday.

The $11 billion forms part of a larger round that has not yet closed. It is expected to be completed in the coming weeks and could reach around $20 billion in total, a source told Bloomberg. That would fall well short of the $30 billion OpenAI was reported in late September to be targeting.

The report came hours after Bloomberg said potential buyers in the IPO of rival Anthropic were considering a substantially lower valuation than the company had targeted. Some prospective investors believe Anthropic could be valued as low as $1.1 trillion, compared with the $2 trillion investors were said to be expecting about a month ago.

OpenAI had previously suggested it would go public this year before delaying those plans, and is now expected to list at some point in 2027.

The developments come at an uncertain moment for the AI market. The Democratic landslide in the U.S. midterms and strongly negative voter sentiment toward data centers have unsettled investors, with many anticipating future regulatory challenges for the industry.
