London-based OpenDialog Secures Over €7M for Developing Safe Conversational AI in Regulated Sectors

OpenDialog, a leading conversational AI platform catering to regulated industries, successfully raised €7.3 million in a Series A funding round last week. The round, spearheaded by AlbionVC, aims to enhance the safe use of Generative AI in regulated sectors, focusing on healthcare and insurance. With this investment, the London-based company’s total funding reaches $13 million.

The conversational AI market is rapidly expanding, projected to hit $38 billion by 2029. OpenDialog addresses the challenges faced by regulated industries in adopting Natural Language Understanding (NLU) technologies and Large Language Models (LLMs) like GPT-4. It provides a unique, no-code platform that combines powerful LLMs and NLU technologies, ensuring compliance, safety, and efficiency.

OpenDialog’s platform enables enterprises to create AI-powered chatbots and digital assistants that are compliant and tailored to specific business needs. These tools not only automate complex business processes but also generate deep insights through data collection, aiding continuous improvement.

Founded in 2017, OpenDialog stands out with its context-first, multi-agent approach, enabling automation of multi-step business processes through natural conversation. This methodology has proven effective in various sectors, including insurance, legal, and pharmaceuticals, significantly automating tasks and enhancing customer experiences.

The latest funding will fuel further research and development, U.S. market expansion, and the enhancement of industry-focused solutions. Since its seed round in spring 2022, OpenDialog has quadrupled its staff, growing to over 40 employees.

Some comments from those included in the funding round:

“We’re building a category-defining business that redefines the way humans interact with technology and that makes advanced and Generative AI realizable for enterprises. Businesses are keen to take advantage of the technology they see manifested in applications like ChatGPT, but they’re struggling to figure out how to make that a reality in a business context without exposing themselves to risks. We can offer them the security, granular control, explainability and safety which is essential for all businesses, but particularly those operating in regulated sectors like insurance, healthcare, financial services and utilities.”

— Terry Walby, co-founder and CEO of OpenDialog

“Conversational AI has evolved massively since early chatbots. In OpenDialog, we have a team of proven entrepreneurs and technologists who have successfully built and scaled enterprise businesses before and we’re convinced that they have the potential to be one of a handful of global leaders in this once-in-a-generation transformation.”

— Ed Lascelles, Partner at AlbionVC
