The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is launching a $3.5 million competition to advance robotic systems that can assist surgeons and eventually perform trauma procedures autonomously during combat and mass-casualty events.
The motive behind the DARPA Surgical Competition is the shortages of available surgeons when large numbers of traumatic injuries occur at once. DARPA noted survivable injuries can become fatal when medical personnel are overwhelmed, particularly during large-scale military operations.
According to DARPA, the competition will use what it calls an apprenticeship model, initially testing robotic systems as partners that assist human surgeons during complex trauma procedures before evaluating whether they can independently assess injuries, plan treatment and carry out surgical interventions.
“In future conflicts or mass casualty incidents, our human medical capacity will be stretched beyond its limits,” DARPA program manager for the competition Dr. Jeremy C. Pamplin said. “We are not trying to replace surgeons; we are building them a highly skilled partner. By pushing the boundaries of artificial intelligence, robotic dexterity, and human-machine teaming, we can create scalable, life-saving capacity when and where it is needed most.”
Competition Details
Competitors must first pass a series of Component Gates covering medical knowledge, physical capability and rapid learning. Top-performing teams will then move into two operational tracks:
- Surgical Collaboration Lane: A $1.5 million prize pool for systems that safely and efficiently assist a lead surgeon during a damage-control procedure.
- Surgical Independence Lane: A $1.5 million prize pool for systems that autonomously assess, plan and perform a trauma procedure without human intervention.
- Component Gate Prizes: An additional $500,000 for leading performance in individual capabilities.
The U.S. Department of War agency is seeking participants from robotics, artificial intelligence and bioengineering. DARPA’s Biological Technologies Office will oversee the effort. DARPA also expects technologies developed through the competition could have civilian uses, including disaster response and expanding access to specialist surgical care in rural areas.
